4 Ways to Take Your Eyes off Yourself and Focus on God

“Oh no, not again!” At times, when a new menstrual cycle began, my immediate focus centered on ‘Me, Myself, and I.’ Did I consistently surrender my fertility journey to the Lord? Was my focus on His love and guidance during my journey? No, not always. I let disappointment and despair take over and pull me down. Have you ever felt that way? How did you cope?
Focusing on the goodness of God and His plan of joy is the fastest way out of an emotional pit. How can you climb out quickly? Let’s chat about it.
Time immersed in The Lord and His Word is a B-12 shot of optimism
During Easter, I found a deep connection and guidance from Him through praying with the Scriptures, fasting, and serving others. These were not just practices for the season. My attention was directed to adoring Jesus, His surrender to God’s will, and honoring what He did on the cross. He died in atonement for my sins, was resurrected to heaven, and now was actively present to hear my prayers and direct me.
He had the answers to my infertility challenges, which brought me peace and joy.
Try these four meditations to focus on Him and what He has done for you.
Over the next two weeks, direct your focus to Jesus, and experience His forgiveness of ungodly behaviors. Fortify yourself with optimism by meditating on the following four Scriptures. Concentrate on a new Scripture every few days—consider memorizing them. Allow yourself some time to listen for what He wants you to know. Enjoy peace and serenity with Him.
#1 Meditation:
I will give thanks to You, LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds…
Those who know Your name trust in You,
for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You.
Psalm 9:1,10 NIV
- Prepare to meditate: Slowly breathe in, saying “Jesus,” then slowly breathe out, saying “Peace.” Repeat your breathing pattern three times focusing on God’s presence.
- Prayer: Lord God, speak to me as I meditate on these verses. Prompt me to praise and honor You for all You have done for me: (say what your blessings are). I surrender my life to You. Bless my body and allow me to bear children if it is Your will, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
- Today’s direction: Remember God’s love and what His Son, Jesus Christ, did for us with His suffering, death, and resurrection. Keep your eyes on Him and His active response to your prayers. With thanksgiving, focus on the truth in His Word, what is noble, right, pure, lovely, “whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things…and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9 NIV)
#2 Meditation:
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 NIV
- Deep breathe as noted in Meditation #1.
- Prayer: Lord God, prompt me to recognize where I have not trusted or strayed from Your commandments in the Scriptures. I want to bring those behaviors to the forefront of my mind and repent them in the name of Jesus Christ. I’m deeply sorry I have offended You and wish to avoid behaviors that pull me away from You. As you heal me of sin, please also heal my husband’s and my reproductive systems. I ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
- Today’s direction: What are the sinful acts contrary to God’s parameters for healthy, holy living? For instance, look at the Ten Commandments (Matthew 22:37-40), also behaviors considered immoral (Galatians 5:19-21)
#3 Meditation:
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:1-2 NIV
- Deep breathe as noted in Meditation #1.
- Prayer: Lord God, reveal where I am not exhibiting godly behavior. I want to have a pure heart. Forgive me of my sins. Strengthen me to avoid temptations. Steer me to Your words of godly character. Cast out any negative, anxious thoughts I have about my ability to conceive and have a family. Steer my focus on Your love and will. I ask in the name of Jesus Christ.
- Today’s direction: Allow yourself time to rest in God’s presence as He gives you the ‘spiritual cleansing’ of forgiveness. Check out Galatians 5:22-23 and Proverbs 31 about godly, noble character.
#4 Meditation:
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and He will reward them for what they have done.
Proverbs 19:17 NIV
- Deep breathe as noted in Meditation #1.
- Prayer: Lord God, speak to me as I meditate on these verses. Redirect my priorities from having consuming thoughts about my fertility to serving those around me—especially the hungry, poor, and oppressed. Show me ways I can uplift the lowly. I ask in the name of Jesus.
- Today’s direction: Where are the needs in your community? Is there a food pantry or shelter for people experiencing poverty that needs help? Are there ministries overseas that aid children that need financial support? Take 5-10 minutes or more to be still and let God’s Holy Spirit speak to You.
As mentioned above, I will send you more Scriptures for meditation in two weeks so that you can immerse yourself in special time with Jesus before Easter Sunday.
